1st Summer School on Sustainable Pharmacy

Background and Objective

Some of the major challenges today are pharmaceutical issues such as multi resistant bacteria in antibiotics production, pharmaceutical residues in the environment that affect entire ecosystems, and campaigns for vaccines,... In contrast to chemistry, a concept of a (more) Sustainable Pharmacy has not yet been established. Nevertheless, small steps towards ‘more sustainable pharmacy’ are being taken in various places. At the University of Freiburg, it is our goal to promote the development of ‘Sustainable Pharmacy’ on an (inter)national, interdisciplinary, and interprofessional level. Sustainable Pharmacy, as we understand it, is a guiding principle for sustainable development that aims to provide effective therapies for current and future generations by integrating environmental, economic, and social, as well as pharmacological, educational, and cultural aspects. Aspects of green and sustainable chemistry, while important, are not sufficient to address the complex interactions in the healthcare system, e.g., between patients, physicians, and pharmacists, or between industry, government, and health insurances.

Our objective for this 1st Summer School on Sustainable Pharmacy is to bring together young scientists from different disciplines who are already working on aspects of sustainable pharmacy or are interested in doing so in their future research or teaching activities. We want to promote a common understanding of sustainable development and its potential and threats in the context of pharmacy and health in general. We also want to foster a common language for this emerging field and provide room for discussion and exchange for this new research community.
